Chapter 5

The next day

The day after the game everyone hoped things would get back to the way it was. But Bob and Tommy had other ideas. They wanted to get on with training the young ones.

But this time the mums got their way, and the ducklings were to take a long rest.

After a few months it was time for Mary and her family to return home. ‘Ruth, it is time we were getting back home. But we will return when it is time for the Ashes Test match.’

‘Oh, that would be nice, but no one has said anything about a Test match yet.’

‘Don’t worry, they will. You can back that one in.’ Mary waved a final goodbye, and they left.

Now for a while, peace and quiet reigned over the farm. Bob seemed to be lost without Tommy around.

‘Bob, you don’t know just what to do with yourself now that Tommy is not here.’

‘Oh, Ruth, we had such fun, and it is taking me long to wind down,’ Bob said, sitting with his head down.

Ruth thought it was better to leave him to himself, and he will come around.

A year had passed and no sign of Tommy and family. Bob thought there was not going to be a cricket game. Suddenly a flock of ducks flew past the farm. Bob just knew it was Tommy and his family. Bob went running over to the lake where they were last time, but when he got there, he found that he was wrong. Bob was so disappointed that he just walked around with his wings behind him and his head hung low.

Every day for about a week, Bob walked across to the lake but no Tommy. What were they going to do this year without a cricket game? Everyone was sitting around feeling a bit lost when who should walk past but Tommy.

‘Hey, you guys. Why the long faces?’

Bob jumped up. ‘Tommy, mate, you came.’ Bob was excited.

‘Bob, old bean, wait till I tell you what we had to go through to get here.’ Tommy sat down next to Bob and started to tell Bob all about it.

Mary went off to find Ruth to tell her all about how they thought they were not going to make it. Everyone was so happy they were back together again that they just had to have a party.

The next day after the party, they had started on getting the cricket match going. But Percy and Albert were missing. ‘Blast! Where, the devil, are Percy and Albert? We can’t have a game without them,’ Bob shouted.

‘Calm down, old bean, we will find them.’ Tommy tried to comfort Bob.

Percy did not think about the cricket game when he took Albert. They just left to do what Percy always did and that is to help others that need his help.

They went to meet some of Percy’s long-standing friends. Rhonda was doing what she always did—robbing poor Mr Jones’s garden of his lettuces. ‘Hey, Rhonda, get out of there,’ Percy shouted.
